The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) defines developmentally appropriate practices (DAP) based on three core knowledge bases. These bases are essential for educators to ensure that their teaching strategies meet the developmental needs of young children. The three knowledge bases are: 1)
Knowledge of Child Development and Learning – Understanding how children grow and learn at different stages, and how to provide experiences that are tailored to their developmental level. 2)
Knowledge of the Individual Child – Recognizing each child's unique characteristics and needs, and adjusting practices to support their individual growth and learning. 3)
Knowledge of the Social and Cultural Contexts – Being aware of the diverse backgrounds of children and their families, and integrating this knowledge into practices to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment. By integrating these three knowledge bases, educators can create effective, responsive, and meaningful learning experiences for young children.
